Here is the fifth of ten original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is a portion of the storage yard at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop. The south wing of the Shop is visible in the background. Prominent here is PRR engine #2824, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an H-8B during November of 1910, rebuilt in Juniata as an H-9S in April of 1923, and retired in March of 1953 after 43 years of faithful service. In the foreground are numerous high-grade steel steam locomotive driving wheels, tires, and axles destined for the Recycling Center. |
