Q531  Contributor's Pick!
Q531 crosses the Tennessee River/Kentucky Lake after dropping a cut of cars off in the small yard at New Johnsonville. This bridge was originally built for the Illinois Central's crossing of the river at Gilbertsville, KY. The N.C.&St.L. purchased the bridge when the IC rerouted their Kentucky Division trackage over the top of Kentucky Dam in the 1940's. The lift bridge replaced an older swing bridge that was located upriver (Johnsonville was one of several towns relocated due to the creation of Kentucky Reservoir/Lake). Ironically, the Paducah & Louisville has since removed the tracks from Kentucky Dam, building a new bridge several years ago.
