USSX S-1 #701 - US Steel Corp  Contributor's Pick!
Very little information about this intriguing little Alco S-1 unit, one of the 543 Alco built between 1940-50. Michael A. Tedesco captured this one in South Buffalo, NY, area. Mike Woodruff's comment (below) prompted a search that yielded several corroborating facts - US Steel owns Tennessee Coal & Iron Co; at least 5 other TCI locos were shifted to the US Steel roster; similar number #701 at both plants; nearly identifcal parts on both. Therefore, USSX 701 most probably is former TCI #701 and would become BSOR 701 and now serves the Dunlop Tire plant in Tonawanda, NY, just 12 miles away from where this photo was taken. Not absolute but sure a strong case. Thanks, Mike!

Mike Woodruff General I'd say there's a real good chance that this is ex-Tennessee Coal & Iron 701 (Alco serial 69683, built 3/42). If so, she's extant as Buffalo Southern 701, and works at the Dunlop Tire plant in Tonawanda, NY: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1382421 9/4/2016 12:57:22 PM
