Train 49, the Lake Shore Limited, arrives at Albany-Renssalaer behind a pair of FL 9s. Originally built for the New Haven basically as an FP 9 with third rail capability to run through from Grand Central to non electrified territory, a dozen found their way onto Amtrak, where eventually six would survive into the 1990s. Using them eliminated the time honored engine change at Harmon, and trains could run straight through to Albany, where the train would have the Boston section switched in. Now the switching and engine change could be completed simultaneously, saving time.
