IC Central Station
Description:
Illinois Central Railroad Central Station at about Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Romanesque Revival structure, designed by Bradford L. Gilbert and built by the Illinois Central Railroad, opened April 17, 1893 to meet the traffic demands of the World's Columbian Exposition. The nine-story building featured a 13-story clock tower and housed the general offices of the railroad. The station closed in 1972 when Amtrak rerouted services to Union Station. The station building was demolished in 1974.

The C&IW was a subsidiary of the IC, switching the industries in and around the Hawthorne Yard (Cicero) area. This locomotive was built in January 1951 (c/n 12895) on EMD Order 6169, in 1981 becoming ICG SW14 1474, and later went to MJ Ry.

The Chicago & Illinois Western was a switching subsidiary of the Illinois Central, having about 12 miles of main track and a couple more miles of trackage rights, running roughly along the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal from Willlow Springs on the west to about Western Avenue in Chicago on the east end. The June 1965 issue of the Official Guide list 32 freight connections and junction points on the C&IW.

IC SW7 236 dead at the Shops, Paducah, Kentucky, June 25, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1951 as LOAM 10 (c/n 9798) on EMD Order 6238, it became IC 236, and is seen here at the ICG's Paducah Shops, which were apparently closed down when I visited. Sometime during 1986, the Paducah Shops became the shops of VMV Enterprises, which appears to have been a division of the Paducah & Louisville (PAL).

IC TR 1026B
Description:
IC TR2B 1026B, Markham Yard, near Chicago, Illinois, June 27, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1940 as TR 9203B (c/n 1032B) on EMD Order E286, it was renumbered to 1026B during 1956, rebuilt to SW13B 1300B during 1972, and went to PAL in 1986. As best I can determine, the TR2A and TR2B designations had not (yet) been designed when the TR's were built in 1940. Also seen is IC 201, a 2-4-4T suburban locomotive which participated in the 1948 Wheels-A-Rolling Chicago Railroad Fair. This was a fantrip, I don't recall the details, except that this scene was set up for us by the IC, and there is another railfan in this photo, waiting for me to get out of his shot.

This was a fan trip on the IC's Electric Division, I don't recall the sponsor, perhaps the Central Electric Railfans' Association. The pictured MU car was number 1236, built in 1928 by Pullman. This was the motor of a motor-trailer pair. There is probably a woman somewhere on this planet that would love to see this photo.

Description:
A backlit Illinois Central Gulf Railroad SW14 1418 at Elmhurst, Illinois on September 24, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1950 as IC SW7 9313 (c/n 11651) on EMD Order 4053, it was later renumbered to 1213. During 1979 it was rebuilt at Paducah, Kentucky to ICG SW14 1418, retired August 25, 1992.

ICG SW14 1434
Description:
ICG SW14 1434, Memphis, Tennessee, March 15, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Seen here is SW14 1434, built in July 1951 as IC SW9 9456 (c/n 14379) on EMD Order 4093, renumbered to 456. It was rebuilt during 1980 to SW14 1434, retired June 8, 1998 and sold to NRE. Also seen is Paducah BU2 Slug 57, built as IC SW9 9435 (c/n 14358) on EMD Order 4093 , renumbered to 435, then 1248, rebuilt as Slug 57 during 1981, sold for scrap during June 1987. Note that the Slug retained its friction bearings. The lead locomotive is SW14 1489, built as IC SW9 9474 (c/n 16416) on EMD Order 4123, renumbered to 474, rebuilt during 1981. It appears that sometime between rebuilding of 1434 and 1489 the ICG had a change of heart about the color of the cab numbers.
